MLOps basics: data your models can rely on
A model is rarely better than the data it was trained on. That is why in most AI projects the biggest gain comes not from a more complex algorithm but from better organised data. Here are the basics that make data reliable.
A single source of truth
When the same information lives in the CRM, in spreadsheets and in accounting, each version says something slightly different. Decide which source leads for each kind of data and build automated pipelines that bring the data from there instead of manual exports.
Quality checks at every step
Missing values, duplicates, sudden jumps in volume: problems like these should stop the pipeline before they reach the model. Simple automated checks, such as an expected row count, allowed values and data freshness, catch most of them.
Traceable origin
When a model gives a strange result, you need to be able to say where the data came from and what happened to it along the way. Lineage makes this possible and helps with internal audits as well as requirements such as GDPR.
Versions of data and models
Record which data and which settings each model was trained with. Then you can reproduce a result, compare two versions and roll back to the previous one if the new one performs worse.
Access and personal data
Not everyone on the team needs to see everything. Restrict access to sensitive data, mask personal information where it is not needed and document who uses what. This reduces risk and makes compliance easier.
Monitoring after deployment
Over time, production data drifts away from the data the model was trained on. Monitor the distribution of the input data and the quality of the predictions so you know in time when retraining is needed.
In short
Reliable data is not a one-off task but a habit: clear sources, automated checks, traceability, versions and monitoring. With these basics in place, experimenting with new models becomes fast and safe.
